Develop a Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program

Faculty-led study abroad programs are academic experiences/programs that are initiated, organized, and carried out by full-time members of the Loyola faculty, with assistance from the Center for International Education. Faculty Travel Funds

The Center for International Education offers funding opportunities for faculty to travel to prospective locations abroad with the intent to develop faculty-led programs. Proposals must be submitted by March 1 for summer travel, and October 1 for J-Term travel. Although efforts will be made to provide full funding, this is a competitive process with limited resources, so proposals may be partially funded. The maximum awarded will be $2000. Funds can only be used for the exclusive purpose of exploring new sites for Summer and J-Term faculty-led programs. Spanish at Jesuit Universities in Latin America

Have you been thinking about learning or improving your language abilities in Spanish? Two of our sister Jesuit universities in Latin America offer Spanish language courses during the summer for faculty and staff from AJCU institutions. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn or improve your language skills. Details about the programs are usually available in December and January.  

The Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla in Mexico offers a 3-week session in June. There is no tuition, but participants have to pay for their housing and meals. Participants can select a home stay (the best way to learn a language), dormitories or a hotel for your housing. For more information please visit this website.

The Universidad Javeriana in Cali, Colombia offers a four-week program starting in late June and covers tuition, lodging and meals. There is a fee.

Collaborative Online International Learning

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a platform by which two or more institutions can come together to develop shared courses and engage their students online in a collaborative and multicultural environment. Collaboration opportunities are available with Australian Catholic University (Australia), RMIT University (Australia), Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (Ecuador), the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), and more. The International Association of Jesuit Universities sponsors a Global Citizenship Curriculum Project, which gives faculty the opportunity to integrate a Global Citizenship model into their existing classes and to involve their students in Zoom dialogues with peers around the world. Participating students will be eligible to apply for the Global Citizenship Fellows Program, which brings a cohort to the IAJU assembly in an exciting location such as the U.S., Spain, or Colombia. Any faculty interested in participating in the project should contact the project coordinator, Tom Banchoff, at banchoff@georgetown.edu.

The ISEP COIL Academy is a complimentary program offered to Loyola faculty as part of our ISEP membership. The ISEP COIL Academy provides structured mentoring and best practices provided by COIL and virtual exchange experts. Working within a small cohort of ISEP Academy Fellows, participants are matched with collaborators and mentored through the process of designing a COIL course they will teach collaboratively. AHEA Membership

Through Loyola's partnership with ISEP, faculty can receive a complimentary membership to the American Higher Education Alliance (AHEA), a non-profit organization that provides faculty and universities around the world the opportunity to connect and engage, expand their international research and partnerships, and collaborate to create and host virtual courses. 

As a member of the ISEP community, you will receive additional, exclusive benefits when you join AHEA:

  • Access to the exclusive AHEA+ISEP Academy. The AHEA+ISEP Academy is a complimentary program for the ISEP community offered twice per year by AHEA. The program provides structured mentoring and best practices provided by Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and virtual exchange experts. Working with a small cohort of ISEP Academy fellows, selected faculty will be matched with collaborators to design a COIL-inspired course.
  • Participate in an ISEP Community Forum, for discussion and connection with other faculty from ISEP member and affiliate universities around the world. 
  • Teach two free courses on AHEA's collaborative learning management system. 
  • Receive an ISEP Member Digital Badge, which identifies you as a faculty member of an ISEP member or affiliate university within AHEA's networking platform.

The Fulbright Scholar Program

Fulbright Scholars -- college and university faculty, administrators, and researchers, as well as artists and professionals -- build their skills and connections, gain valuable international insights, and return home to share their experiences with their students and colleagues. Scholars come from and go to all institution types and geographic regions across the United States and around the world.

The Fulbright Scholar Program for academics and professionals awards more than 1,700 fellowships each year, enabling 800 U.S. Scholars to go abroad and 900 Visiting Scholars to come to the United States. As a Fulbright Scholar, you'll make meaningful contributions to communities abroad and at home, as well as in your chosen field. You'll also advance your career by joining a network of accomplished alumni serving as leaders and educators across the globe.
